Celilo Doesn’t Disappoint at the Doug Fir

Last time I saw Celilo, there was an air of sadness there, and a disjointedness I couldn’t help but take note of. But this time, Saturday night at the Doug Fir? Celilo hummed like a well-oiled machine. They have brought two women into the act, a singer and a violinist, and their sweet sounds round out Celilo beautifully. The first time I saw Celilo live I liked them. Now, I LOVE them.

The crowd was sparse throughout Strand of Oaks’ opening set. They did listen attentively to the one-man act. He was quite interesting. Picture a long haired rocker dude who used to be a second grade teacher/bus driver playing moody, introspective songs. He was deliciously depressing. I worried for Celilo, though. Would their show get the crowd it deserved?

It did. By the time Celilo hit the stage, the Doug Fir was packed. They opened with “Sunken Ships,” a track from their 2009 album Bending Mirrors.  They also played a great rendition of “ Pinata,” also from Bending Mirrors. Check out the video below:

Here’s another video I took. This one is of “Pink Sofa,” a bluegrassy foot stomper. They had a guest violinist and guest vocalist accompany them, which made the song even better.

Celilo must have read my concert preview because they played “Street Sweeper!” But they called it “The Street Sweeper Suite” this time. It was every bit as good as last time! I’m so happy I got to see this show!

Celilo opened for Joe Pug, but I can’t tell you anything about that because I had to leave right after Celilo’s set (darn day job!).

Celilo doesn’t have any scheduled shows right now, but that’s because they are working on their new album. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on their progress.
