Daniel Kohn

Daniel Kohn

Ever since he first heard the opening chords to "Smells Like Teen Spirit," at the age of 11, Daniel Kohn has been hooked on music. Born in New York City, raised in the music hotbed of Long Island and currently residing in Los Angeles, Kohn has been writing since high school, when he realized he could get CDs for free. He's a sucker for '90s music, especially that from Seattle. Like a small minority of Americans, he likes football of the European variety, especially Liverpool. When he's not chasing down bands, you can find him at your local pub with a pint of Carlsberg, usually at ungodly hours cheering on his beloved Reds.

As has been well publicized for anyone who has tuned into any music or entertainment website the past few days, this week is SXSW down in Austin. While it seems like every single band in the world has stormed the Texas capital, well, believe it or not, some haven’t. Some actually have the power and buzz surrounding them that they don’t need to ta...

These free month-long residencies (throughout the city for that matter) allow for musicians to hone their craft and build their fanbase in the most organic of ways: via word of mouth. This past Monday was no differe...

For one reason or another, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are two of the most polarizing figures in music (especially hip-hop) today. One reason may be because Macklemore doesn’t have the typical cred and qualities that go along with being a rapper would usually entail. He’s white, from Seattle (not exactly known as a hotbed for emerging rappers), his...

Remember the Australian band Crowded House? If not, trust me, they rock. Songs like “Don't Dream It's Over” and their previous band, Split Enz's “I Got You” are understated classics that were international hits. With their pop sensibilities along with an alt edge, the brothers Finn were pioneers for a generation of bands from Down Under. While Ne...

For the better part of the 21st Century, Craigslist has been used an abundance of things, both good and bad. As the modern day classifieds section, people looking for jobs, furniture and even bandmates can be had on the popular website. That’s how the two musicians behind Los Angeles’ Capital Cities, Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, found each ot...
