Daniel Kohn

Daniel Kohn

Ever since he first heard the opening chords to "Smells Like Teen Spirit," at the age of 11, Daniel Kohn has been hooked on music. Born in New York City, raised in the music hotbed of Long Island and currently residing in Los Angeles, Kohn has been writing since high school, when he realized he could get CDs for free. He's a sucker for '90s music, especially that from Seattle. Like a small minority of Americans, he likes football of the European variety, especially Liverpool. When he's not chasing down bands, you can find him at your local pub with a pint of Carlsberg, usually at ungodly hours cheering on his beloved Reds.

The one thing 2012 didn't have was a lack of fantastic albums. Whether it was a hyped debut to an emerging band finally releasing it's finest work, this year had it all. There were so many great albums to choose from, but only five could be nominated. The 2012 nominees for Best New Album: Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls, Gary Clark, Jr. - Black ...

Unless you’re in the rare band that manages to exceed all kinds of stereotypes and preconceived notions, the odds are that in the modern day music biz, you need to move to one of the big cities to get your big start. That’s not to discredit our friends who don’t live in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Nashville and these days, Portland, but si...
Thursday night in Los Angeles was unlike any we’d seen in a while: it rained. Yes, the presses stopped and everything stood still, literally. Except that is live music. Fans in the City of Angels had a smorgasbord of choices: Cat Power, Titus Andronicus and Delta Spirit. I chose the latter. The Wiltern was the choice venue for this show, and tho...
As everyone knows by now, Superstorm Sandy (or whatever you want to call it) pretty much destroyed New York and New Jersey. Dayton-based Heartless Bastards were a band who got diverted from their tour schedule due to the storm, but managed to survive and talk about it. Their latest video for “Marathon” channels the Wizard of Oz and though the sto...
