Benicassim Festival, or The Festival Internacional de Benicàssim, as it is rightly called, is a 4-day music fest that takes place on the east coast of Spain. This year it’s happening from July 12-15th. It’s no big enlightenment to say that Europe hosts some of the best festivals in the world, and this is arguably one of them. For one thing, the main stage headliners are the recently reformed Stone Roses, New Order, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and Florence + the Machine (Above: Photo By Daniel Boud). Do we even need to say any more than that? Well, of course since our main purpose in life is to highlight new bands, yes we do. And we will.

Pony Bravo – unfortunately, my Spanish is terrible, but that doesn’t mean Pony Bravo’s intelligent fusion of blues, flamenco, and '60s Ethiopian pop can’t speak to me.

Los Tiki Phantoms – Apparently, there’s a lot of good surf rock coming out of Spain right now, and this band dons skeleton phantom masks for their beach jams.

Disappears – infectious psych garage gaze band from Chicago that falls somewhere along the lines of A Place to Bury Strangers and The Horrors (who are also on the lineup), which makes them perfect for a late night drown yourself in sound session.

The Crookes – based out of Sheffield, The Crookes sound and look like they could be UK’s answer to The Drums.

Django Django – London–based experimental psych band that makes music to help you use those parts of your brain you don’t normally use, just to remind you of what’s possible.

Even more is possible, as the full lineup hasn’t even been completely confirmed yet. Tickets start at 75 Euros for one day, up to 165 Euros for a full 4-day pass. Keep up with announcements and other festival news on Twitter and Facebook, and you can also listen to the festival-curated playlist on Spotify.

I grew up listening to the music my parents listened to. My mom gave me some of her “Golden Oldies” cassette tapes, and I could sit in my room for hours harmonizing with The Ronettes, and staring at Del Shannon, who I thought was a total stud in his tiny black and white photo on the glossy fold-out insert. I listened to Willie Nelson because my Dad admired him so much, and I wanted to understand what was so great about him too. My first concert wasn’t a huge life changer; I saw Inner Circle at a local Jambalaya festival in Central Florida. Their biggest hit was “Bad Boys,” the theme song to COPS. If anything, that concert should have traumatized me. But, at the time I had no comprehension of any crassness. I just remember the guitarist making eye contact with me and smiling, and feeling excitement over having a brief connection with someone who was making me dance.

It’s the same thing with listening to music with words in another language. It’s not necessary to understand words or literal meanings. It’s the way the melodies and rhythms evoke feeling. It’s like that saying about art, how you may not be able to explain it, but you know it when you see it. I can’t always describe music (although obviously, I sure as hell try to), but I know what I like when I feel it, and I think those who can evoke that feeling deserve to be acknowledged for it. That’s what I want to describe. That’s what I want to share.
