Grow your nails out and learn some finger pickin’ licks, because Pickathon Festival is taking place Aug 3-5 at Pendarvis Farm, Oregon. This year marks the 14th installment of the Northwestern fest, and because it’s Oregon, it’s one of the most sustainable and green festivals in the land. Definitely expect some roots rock and western sounds with eccentric indie twists, but not all the bands can be pigeonholed into that. Have a gander and a listen at a few:
The Two Man Gentleman Band – They probably sound exactly what their name might imply to you - Jazzy old timey music, and the best way to catch their attention is to taste like pork chops.
This festival isn’t all about classic stringed instruments. THEESatisfaction is a super suave duo of lady rappers/R&B crooners who will make you turn off your swag and just groove.
The Mynabirds – fierce female-fronted rock with a message of cultural and political empowerment.
Petunia & The Vipers – Their bio had me at “his live performances have been likened to an Avant-Country night club scene from a David Lynch movie.” Um, where can I see this live? Oh duh, at Pickathon. And the likeness on YouTube:
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis – Lewis is like a more bluesy Ritchie Valens, and Kitty and Daisy can dance like go go girls when they’re not playing drums and organ. Think the original Adams Family (because they are actually siblings) playing mod rockabilly.
Phosphorescent – Alright so he’s not exactly a brand new band, but that just means Matthew Houck been around long enough to prove that his music is most stirring in the raw. Check out his Tiny Desk Concert at NPR, and pretend he’s singing to you.Tickets are going pretty quick – Saturday single tickets are already sold out, as well as some of the camping options. There’s just 20 days left to order any of the others online, so go on and git ‘em while you can.
