After her first two releases Nadler is releasing her self-titled album this June and playing shows with greats such as Timber Timbre and Low, her effortless talent is undeniable.
I was lucky enough to catch up with Marissa and she clued me (and now, you!) into her latest album, and on the road must-haves!
Lauren Novik: Let's start with the basics- main musical influences?
Marissa Nadler: Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Kate Bush, Throwing Muses, Catherine Ribeiro and the alpes, linda perhacs.. I could go on and on. I'm quite fond of Gillian Welch as well. I'm big into classic rock actually.
LN: You're on tour promoting your self-titled release- what inspired the album?
MN: Life experiences, love, and heartbreak really. This record is really very autobiographical but with shrouds of color.
LN: How would you say your sound has evolved from your previous albums?
MN: I am more direct emotionally and vocally. I'm writing from more of a confessional place now.
LN: Any pre-show vices or rituals?
MN: I like to have a few drinks before I play to get over severe stage fright.
LN: Music's not an easy industry for anyone- any bad jobs you've had while waiting for the so called big break?
MN: I have had an endless amount of odd jobs. I think temping is the worst for me because it usually is so far from utilizing anything that I am good at that it just kills my soul.
LN: What's up next for you for the rest of 2011?
MN: Touring this record and starting to write some more.
LN: We’ll be waiting, anxiously!
LN: Must have on tour accessory?
MN: Scrabble.
