Best Coast’s singer/songwriter Bethany Consentino must have been raised with The Beach Boys and 50’s girl groups as is evident in her catchy and sunny pop songs as vibrant and soothing as the California coastline.
Rounded out by multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno and drummer, ex-Vivian Girls, Ali Koehler, this 3-piece delivers upbeat tunes utilizing lo-fi recordings and surf rock sensibilities. After releasing three EP’s and two split albums, Best Coast received mild attention with their single, “When I’m With You,” a musical number about Consentino’s happy times with her guy. The music video showcases a quirky storyline with a Ronald McDonald look-alike as her boy-toy.
On July 27th, Best Coast released their anticipated debut, Crazy For You, and the 13 tracks on this glimmering album released by Mexican Summer perfectly showcase the bright future this ensemble has. From standout cuts about unrequited love (“Boyfriend”) to the cheerful (“Happy”) with its sing-along chorus, “ooo-oo-oo-oooah.”
The blatant heartbreak found on this gem of an album clashes smoothly with the confident and reverb filled vocals and is sure to be the next album you play while cruising on Pacific Coast Highway.
