Baths Flood the Dance Floor at Slims

On Thursday evening, L.A. based producer Will Wiesenfeld – bette known as  Baths – made a return stop to San Francisco to perform at all ages venue Slims. Throughout this year, Will has been out on the road in support of his recent release Pop Music/False B-Sides. This past March, he headlined a sold out show at the Rickshaw Stop. Having generated a lot of buzz from his first visit, it was no surprise that the venue was nearly packed to capacity before he even took the stage. Having only heard his organic studio/bedroom produced albums, I was extremely anxious to hear how he would transfer this sound to a live setting.

As the screen rose and Will took the stage sporting his huge chops and flashing a large smile, it was easy to tell that this 21-year-old loves his life. At this same moment the crowd erupted in cheering and turned their full attention to the stage. His timing and vocals live were absolutely mind blowing. Early in his set, he played his Passion Pit sounding track “You’re My Excuse to Travel” from his debut album Curelean. Everything about this song was perfect, Will’s vocals were powerful and carried enormous amounts of emotion as he strangled the mic and reached down for the high notes.

My two favorite songs of the evening were “Plea” from his debut album and “Nordic Laurel” from his 2011 album. Both songs translated extremely well live. The song “Nordic Laurel” contains beautiful dreamy layers that instantly filled the air. On this track, his mixing was dead on as the pulsating beat and soothing sounds and lyrics captured the crowd. Hearing the acoustic guitar strums echo in the air to kick of “Plea” was a strong intro into Will’s smooth vocals as the song began to open up. He seamlessly delivered this fan favorite before leaving the stage.

Everyone in attendance knew that this would be a short intermission as Will soon returned to announce his encore. He said, “I’m going to be very specific with this encore – there’s going to be a fast one, a slow one and a fast one. So, I don’t want any of you getting all upset half way through.” He did not lie and like he said played a fast one and then played the slowed down “Rain Smell”. This track was way cool to hear live as a lot of the subtle layers really jumped out through the sound system.

Make sure to catch him live in 2012 – Find out when by staying connected with Baths on Facebook and Twitter
