Under-the-radar indie veterans Blonde Redhead will be coming to Portland’s Roseland Theater this Saturday, and it will be a show not to be missed, for several different reasons, including a possible new starlet.

First off, fans of Blonde Redhead will be pleased to see the band in Portland again in support of their new album, Penny Sparkle, which came out on 4AD in September. With this album, the band has transitioned a bit from their past shoegaze style to a newer sound that almost hits chillwave. This transition has been the subject of some criticism, but anyone who has followed the band will no doubt appreciate the show.

The subject of our anticipation, as a site always looking for the next big thing, is opener Ólöf Arnalds. The Icelandic vocalist has been a member of Mum since 2003 and released her first solo album in 2007. This September, Arnalds released her sophomore solo effort, Innundir Skinni, to critical praise and buzz. She sounds a bit like a mellowed-out and less eager Joanna Newsom, with a similarly warbly voice that is bound to be divisive, just like Newsom’s. The distinctive voice may also remind some of her countrywoman Bjork, who contributes vocals on single “Surrender,” but Arnalds is a true folk musician at heart. Her songs use little more than her own voice and a traditional instrument or two, and evoke a sense of woodsy scenery and charming fairytales. Arnalds tour with Blonde Redhead will surely create more hype for her in the states, so if you are going to a show on this tour, be sure to get there early.

Portland’s Roseland Theater should be a great place to catch the show on Saturday. While not the best Portland venue, its intimate set-up should serve both bands well. Our newest Portland contributor, Collin Elwyn, will be covering the show this weekend, so look out for his review in a few days.
