Though the two-piece—composed of Tim Nordwind, and Drea Smith—have only been playing music together since last fall, their talents precede them. You may know Nordwind as the goofy, bearded, glasses-wearing bassist of OK Go and Smith as half of the hip-hop/punk-tinged duo He Say, She Say, but together, both of their strengths shine.
Accompanied by a full live band, Nordwind manned bass and keyboard while Smith ruled the microphone. Even though the band has only played a handful of gigs to date, every member looked comfortable in front of the swarm of people surrounding them in the small, swanky club. Nordwind bounced around, slapping his bass strings, while Smith elegantly grooved and swayed, clutching the mic stand as she crooned.
The moody, roots-tinged indie outfit played a short set (it only has recorded five songs, after all) that included tunes from its debut EP, Human Beings, a cover of The Cure’s “Jumping Someone Else’s Train,” and a brand new track called “Smoke And Mirrors.”
“This is the first time we’ve ever played this song live,” Smith warned her intimate audience before delving into the song. Could’ve fooled me; they executed the tune like it was part of their nightly set list. In fact, the whole band performed every song as if it had been playing together for years. Smith hit every note and the instrumentation was precise and tight. Pretty impressive for a band still in its infant stages.
It’s always fun to watch a band from its beginnings, especially one with this much potential. Earlier this month, The Guardian named Pyyramids its “New Band Of The Day,” and the duo is gearing up to play a slew of shows in Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston and Brooklyn in mid-September that will expand its fan base even further. Though the two-piece has not revealed details concerning a debut full-length, Smith has confirmed that one is in the works. With such a well-thought EP already under their belts, it will be exciting to see where an LP takes the bassist and singer both sonically and in terms of popularity. Don’t be surprised if you see the name “Pyyramids,” pop up more in the coming months. The spark has been ignited; it’s just a matter of time before the fire begins to rage.
