Liz Livengood

Liz Livengood

Liz recently returned to her hometown of Portland, OR from San Francisco, where she wrote consumer product reviews forWired magazine. Writing about music has been a lifelong dream for her. She learned about music from her supercool sisters in the '80s, who exposed her to everything from Pet Shop Boys to Slaughter. Known for remembering every song she hears, Liz can never ignore lyrics, which can either make or break a song, in her opinion. When not rocking out at shows, Liz spends time singing a lot of karaoke and playing Rock Band. She can't help being a nerd, okay?

In my review of Drifting by The Sound Of Growing Up, I praised the fun piano pop sounds of the Boston band. I also said I'd love to see them live, which hasn't happened yet, but here's the next best thing: a video. I miss the old MTV days, when slickly produced videos showed me yet another side of the bands I loved. The Sound of Growing Up has ma...
Laura Weinbach of Foxtails Brigade has a voice like the sirens of Homer’s Odyssey. It draws you in with its sheer beauty and takes you places where you teeter on the edge of bliss and terror. Foxtails Brigade’s debut album, The Bread And The Bait, is chock full of dreamy chamber pop- with a sharp edge. The San Francisco duo of singer Laura Wein...

Typhoon + Doug Fir = Epic

Typhoon’s set at the Doug Fir Friday night can only be described as epic. The Portland dodectet (that’s a group of 12 for you non-mathy folks) features a duo of trumpeters, a duo of drummers and a string trio. Lead singer Kyle Morton shines through it all with his soulful vocals and bashful charisma. I can’t say enough good things about Typhoon....

The indie pop orchestra, which comprises a startling 12 members, will play a benefit show for MercyCorps Japan Relief at the Doug Fir tonight with And And And and Brainstorm. If you liked the Polyphonic Spree but thought they were jus...

There's Nothing Classier Than A Denim Wedding

Oh, how I wish there were two of me. If there were two of me, I could go to the Denim Wedding show at the Globe tonight in Portland. No, no, the show is not some messed up hootenanny nuptials. Denim Wedding is a Portland based duo that blends male and female, sadness and joy, pleasure and pain, bitter and sweet. Their music is soulful, moving and...
