Matt De Mello

Matt De Mello

When I was a kid I remember listening to Bob Dylan's lyrics and thinking I want to write like that someday. I followed the musical evolutionary steps from '80's pop, to 90's grunge and gangster rap, I found myself in a quandary in the late '90's and turned to classic rock and alt-country. That was my finding Buddha moment. I discovered greatness in the crackling vinyl sounds of Exile on Main Street, Grievous Angel and Nebraska. I found myself inspired by Nirvana, Pavement and REM. It was this inspiration that led me to write about music. It's the only thing I've ever felt truly comfortable doing. I love music, all music from Miles and Coltrane to Bruce and Dylan. From Nirvana and Pearl Jam to Beethoven and Brahms. From Jimi and Janis to Dre and Pac. I go to shows in San Francisco quite often and love discovering new music. If you have a hot tip on a band or like what I'm saying email me at Matt@BestNewBands.com or follow me @MattKDeMello

If you're not sure who Dreamers of the Ghetto are, don't be ashamed; but, you should fall in line quickly (Check out my review of their debut album here). Dreamers are a phenomenal band out of Indiana that's been compared to Arcade Fire and U2 among others. We at BestNewBands.com think so highly of them that we wanted to give them a spot on the c...

Album Review: Fort Lean – Fort Lean EP

Brooklyn's Fort Lean yearns to be the biggest band in the world and have the work ethic to back it up, at least that’s their claim. They want to be Springsteen, U2 or Oasis. Again these are things they’ve chosen to aspire to, which is commendable. After listening to their EP, I see the potential, but I don’t see that monumental convergence of c...

Album Review: Childish Gambino – Camp

I resisted listening to this album for a long time, because yay another actor made a hip-hop album. We all remember that Jamie Foxx fiasco from a few years ago and who could forget William Shatner’s disastrous foray into making awful, if not comical, music for the masses. Then I started hearing rumblings. My friend Amanda started tweeting endless...

Album Review: Dreamers of the Ghetto – Enemy/Lover

I get a lot of requests to review albums. It’s a consequence and a blessing of being a writer. I’m not particularly enamored by all the new music I hear, but once in a while, I’ll hear something and can’t stop listening. The words begin to formulate in that vast expanse of space behind my eyes, endorphins are released in epic fashion and energe...
