Matt De Mello

When I was a kid I remember listening to Bob Dylan's lyrics and thinking I want to write like that someday. I followed the musical evolutionary steps from '80's pop, to 90's grunge and gangster rap, I found myself in a quandary in the late '90's and turned to classic rock and alt-country. That was my finding Buddha moment. I discovered greatness in the crackling vinyl sounds of Exile on Main Street, Grievous Angel and Nebraska. I found myself inspired by Nirvana, Pavement and REM. It was this inspiration that led me to write about music. It's the only thing I've ever felt truly comfortable doing. I love music, all music from Miles and Coltrane to Bruce and Dylan. From Nirvana and Pearl Jam to Beethoven and Brahms. From Jimi and Janis to Dre and Pac. I go to shows in San Francisco quite often and love discovering new music. If you have a hot tip on a band or like what I'm saying email me at Matt@BestNewBands.com or follow me @MattKDeMello

One of the things that gets me amped for a show is the opening act. We all go for the headliners, but we feel like we discover the opening acts. With a few exceptions, Bruce Springsteen doesn’t have an opening act and frankly he doesn’t need one.  The Rolling Stones had U2 open for them, but they’re iconic rock bands.  Wednesday, I went to see Br...

This has been weird year for music. Rap is pretty much dead and this hybrid of hip-hop and pop has formed. Indie rock is more mainstream than what used to be alternative, which is now pretty much dead as well. And punk rock is reviving itself the way it did 20 years ago. To expound upon the oddities in this tenuous Mayan year I have liked so many...
You might have heard of RAC, the DJ out of Portland, Oregon. Chances are, however, that Andres Allen Anjos, the 27-year old Portuguese national is something of an enigma to you. He is a remix machine having worked on tracks by Lana Del Rey, Peter, Bjorn and John, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Death Cab For Cutie, Foster the People, Edward Sharpe and the M...

Remember the ‘90s? Swing was a thing that people tried bring back and fooled many of us into following. Thanks Swingers! Dave Matthews Band, Spin Doctors and Creed were popular bands. Punk rock was having a revival. Not just a minor revival, but the kind of revival where many thought it had staying power. Bands like Green Day, Pennywise, Bad Reli...

When I first saw Imagine Dragons at the Independent I was blown away by how good they were. I was, I'm ashamed to say, unaware of their brilliance. I have since rectified that situation by rifling through their discography at a frenetic pace, trying to soak it all in like a junkie trying to get every ounce out of that last fix. This interview is ...
