Matt De Mello

When I was a kid I remember listening to Bob Dylan's lyrics and thinking I want to write like that someday. I followed the musical evolutionary steps from '80's pop, to 90's grunge and gangster rap, I found myself in a quandary in the late '90's and turned to classic rock and alt-country. That was my finding Buddha moment. I discovered greatness in the crackling vinyl sounds of Exile on Main Street, Grievous Angel and Nebraska. I found myself inspired by Nirvana, Pavement and REM. It was this inspiration that led me to write about music. It's the only thing I've ever felt truly comfortable doing. I love music, all music from Miles and Coltrane to Bruce and Dylan. From Nirvana and Pearl Jam to Beethoven and Brahms. From Jimi and Janis to Dre and Pac. I go to shows in San Francisco quite often and love discovering new music. If you have a hot tip on a band or like what I'm saying email me at Matt@BestNewBands.com or follow me @MattKDeMello

Album Review: Everest, Ownerless

Every decade there seems to be that band that makes you wonder why they didn’t make it big. In the ‘60s it was the Seeds (download “Pushin’ Too Hard” right now and I’ll give you a pass for not knowing who they are), in the ‘70s it was Robin Trower (Bridge of Sighs is an amazing album), in the ‘80s we had the Pixies (though known they never achiev...
When they came out for their encore, the Avett Brothers looked out at the sold out Greek Theater in Berkeley, Calif., smiled and said, “Thanks for bringin’ us back out ya’ll, been a helluva ride.” It was most certainly that. The Brothers Avett ran through a litany of their classics including “When I Drink”, “I Killed Sally’s Lover” and “Murder in...
I was there too early, before the doors opened. I was a little more stoned that I should’ve been, more than I wanted to be, the shit I’ve been smoking is deathly powerful and I still haven’t grasped that yet. The scene became downright surreal as the Mother Hips, fronted by Tim Bluhm, Nicki Bluhm’s husband, and himself a fantastic solo auteur in ...

Japandroids Destroy San Francisco

The Independent in San Francisco holds 500 people. It is the premier small venue in the Bay Area. On Thursday, Vancouver sent their premier small band and the two converged in a symbiotic mind meld that turned San Francisco into a place where degenerates, punkers and drunkards were one. I knew Japandroids had a phenomenal new album. What I didn’t...

I recently was in New Orleans for a wedding and despite stuffing my gullet with food that took years off my life, I also imbibed in music and booze, a New Orleans specialty. While speaking to some of the locals, one of the bands that came up in conversation was Royal Teeth. I checked out their EP and was completely blown away. That being said, he...
