Big Day Out, the huge summer music festival that spans from Australia to New Zealand, is coming up the end of this month. From January 20th to February 5th the festival will take place in six cities: Auckland, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. What kind of bands are playing this huge festival? Huge ones of course, like Kanye West and Soundgarden, with the likes of Battles and Unknown Mortal Orchestra (pictured), and heavily-mentioned best new bands like Cage The Elephant, The Vaccines and Foster the People. There’s really too many hot new bands to name, but that’s the idea.
Big Day Out was inaugurated in 1992, as one show in Sydney that featured bands like Violent Femmes and Nirvana. With a beginning like that, it’s not too surprising that the festival gradually grew to the epic proportion that it is today. Each day of the festival is around $165, with varying extra fees (of course), and the lineup changes according to date and city as well. The different lineups can be viewed here, and you can keep up with additional announcements and general news on the festival’s official blog.
