Outside Lands Festival, named after what the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Calif., used to be marked as on a map back in the gold rush days, is going down August 10-12. The headliners range from Neil Young & Crazy Horse and Stevie Wonder to Skrillex and Metallica, and the entire lineup in general is heavily populated with new bands of the freshly intriguing variety, including these recommended five:
Father John Misty – This is one of many festival dates for Father John Misty, the moniker of J. Tillman. If you didn’t know before, Tillman was the drummer for Fleet Foxes for a while before breaking off to become a darkly tantalizing preacher man. That sounds kinky, and it kind of is.
Die Antwoord – Don’t tell me you aren’t the slightest bit curious as to what these guys are like live. Ninja’s dancing alone…
Washed Out – Fans vibe hard for Washed Out. This will be one of the best chilled out live shows you’ll find.
Tame Impala – Far out psych rock band from Australia, whose debut LP Innerspeaker you may or may not have obsessed over a couple years ago and since. The band is dropping their follow up full length, Lonerism, in October, so count on hearing a bunch of new tunes from that one.
PAPA – I can just imagine the conversations these guys get into. I bet they’re the kind of people who can think up funny shit all day, but then actually turn it into something substantial and intelligent. And catchy.
Outside Lands isn’t just tunes, either. The festival also boasts a culinary experience with 65 different food offerings for you to really get your grub on. This includes Choco Lands, where chocolate lovers probably want to live, and Wine Lands for the more refined alcoholic. Tickets to any and all your festival fancies can be found here.
