Backstory Bonus! Far-Less’ “So Glad”

far-less

In this special edition of BackStory, Brandon Welch of Far-Less tells us the story behind the darkly poetic “So Glad!”

“So Glad” was the first song that I had ever wrote for FL. Jordan (Powers) and Mark (Karsten) helped a bit with the music but the original idea was hatched in my bedroom on my couch after work.  I wanted to play an instrument in my band.  So I started writing for that album.  Since we got signed I have written 98% of the words… but never music. So the album is a very big deal for me. The song is a homage to Johnny Cash.  I really wanted to write a murder ballad type song like “Delias Gone,” that was the vision. The lyrics are about loving someone that isn’t true and killing them.  Maybe it’s jealousy. Maybe the story teller can’t go on knowing such pain exists because of someone else, being liberated from emotional ties to the lover and to yourself. I just wanted to be Johnny Cash for a few minutes.  The original lyric “softly” was replaced with “but your colors changed” because I was told to do so.  Mike thought a more wordy line would sound better. I still sing the original line though.

“SO GLAD” LYRICS:

Everything is crashing down on my head over and over again.
When the devil came knocking at your front door step,
You never should have let her in.
But you did and now you’re sad.
Do, do, do…
So you did, but you’re not dead.
Do, do, do…
There was a time I’d drive a million miles To hear your heartbeat,
But your colors changed.
Today I’m gonna walk the sand
Just to see your cold heart sink.

So I did and I’m so glad.
(Do, do, do…)
So I did, and your now dead.
(Do, do, do…)
As the cold steel releases
Part of me.
I hope your cold heart will stop this beat I’m remembering.
As the cold steel releases,
I hope your cold will stop this pain.
I’m remembering this agreement used to be here.
So I did, and now you’re sad.
(Do, do, do…)
And I did, but your not dead.
(Do, do, do…)
So I did and I’m so glad.
(Do, do, do…)
So I did, and now your dead.
(Do, do, do…)
