The Californian is actually a quintet of Californians. Go figure! I met with four of the five members over the weekend at my house in Silverlake, and the first question I asked was about the name’s origin. We covered everything from their upcoming full-length album to South Park to the proliferation of surf bands. They shared the story of how they came together as well as another artist they’ve been into lately, and afterwards they played two amazing songs on my couch. Be sure to check out the full interview and performance in the video above, and don’t miss their track “Nanana” available for free download below (try not to get the chorus stuck in your head: it’s gloriously impossible). They just started their June residency Monday nights at The Satellite, so if you missed them last week be sure to catch them for free tonight!

They’ll be playing Monday nights in June at The Satellite, and tonight’s bill also features Races (Black Jesus), Black Flamingo, and Farewell Continental. The show starts at 9:00pm and the event is 21 years of age and older. The Satellite is located at 1717 Silverlake Boulevard in Los Angeles.
