6 New Bands To See At LA’S FYF Fest This Weekend

FYF FEST

Los Angeles – Saturday mark’s FYF Fest’s 11th year and the much-anticipated LA festival has come a long way since its untamed and free debut. Each session has become inarguably more and more esteemed and this year’s lineup is a music lover’s dream.

Well-known names like The Strokes, Haim, Grimes and Passion Pit will headline, but we’re concentrating on the newcomers all our festival friends will discover this weekend. As a public service to our readers, we’ve taken the liberty of collecting the standout musicians who might not be getting radio play (yet), but will definitely make your eardrums happy this weekend.

Saturday:

Angel Olsen

Set Time: 2:45 PM

One of our Newbie Award nominees for 2013’s Best New Female Artist, Angel Olsen’s live show promises powerful vocals and a clean rhythm. An Olsen show is a glimpse into her heart and a dance with her soul. She is uninhibited and self-effacing with her guitar in hand as she muses about heartache. Whether she plays cuts from Half Way Home or the evolved Burn Your Fire For No Witness, Olsen’s sensitivity will glow alongside the beaming sun.

Chet Faker

Set Time: 5:20 PM

Chet Faker is adding a little Australian tender love and care to FYF.  Since releasing his debut album, Built On Glass, earlier this year, Faker has left the music industry abuzz with his blend of synthesizers and R&B. The musician has just the right amount of buttery vocals and tangy piano keyboard-play to satisfy music lovers hungry for more James Blake-like sounds.

Run The Jewels

Set Time: 7:00PM

Who doesn’t love a little hip-hop thrown into a music-filled day? Run The Jewels will hit the stage with a mix of electronic melodies, raps with witty wordplay, and attitude. On the brim of their second album’s October debut, it is probable that we could hear a sneak peek of some unreleased rhymes. The unexpected pairing’s chemistry is fun to watch too.  Our Chris Davis just saw them and wrote: “These BFFs were hot on the mic at every turn, and the masterfully crafted beats shook the crowd to its core.”

Sunday:

Darkside

Set Time: 8:15 PM

Darkside will hit the stage just in time for the sundown so they can light up the park with their mind-twisting light display. Nicholas Jaar’s electronics and Dave Harrington multi-instrumental skill is moody and stimulating far beyond their visual display. Their husky and full sound is of their own invention and it is delivered with an intricacy that entangles listeners and drags them to their knees. Let’s not forget that this will be LA’s last chance to catch the face-melting duo before their hiatus.

Benjamin Booker

Set Time: 3:30 PM

Jack White chose Benjamin Booker to open for him on tour; need we say more? Booker’s self-titled debut album was released this week and there hasn’t been a more powerful blues rock effort since White himself. His riffs are grand, his voice growls, and he’s enveloped in a southern rawness that will get feet moving. If for nothing else, Booker’s screeching rock jam sessions should not be missed. He might not be a recognizable name now, but that will only be short-lived.

Jacco Gardner

Set Time: 2:30 PM

For those who wish they were at Woodstock 1969, Jacco Gardner is a trippy break from the modern day’s fury of electronic beats. His rattling psychedelics are light and mind-altering like an eerie fable. His full curvaceous instrumentals will spread throughout the grounds for a satisfying nod to the music festivals of yesteryear.  Click HERE for our review from last fall.

Ariela Kozin

Ariela Kozin

Ariela was born and raised on Los Angeles' creative hunger and booming sounds. She grew up humming the Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan records her mother played on repeat until a driver's license gave her the freedom to obsessively explore the live music scene. It only seemed natural that when Ariela went to journalism school, she paired her love of writing with her passion for discovering amazing new music.
