Last night, The Independent was filled with the colorful stage performance of Canadian producer John O’Regan (Diamond Rings). I first arrived in the club after the doors had been open for over an hour and there were only a handful of people in attendance. I was a bit concerned that this show would have a weak crowd turnout as a result of it being Monday night.

Myles Cooper
Taking the stage first was the local throwback pop artist Myles Cooper. The dance floor was tired as the band did their best to look beautiful on stage and occasionally sing along with the songs. One character on stage looked as though he had been taken directly out of a scene in Party Monster. He was sporting an oversized black and white striped shirt and a shiny baseball cap as he danced his heart out all the way through the closing song of “Gonna Find Boyfriends Today”.

Diamond Rings
A crowd began to appear as Diamond Rings was preparing for the show. The dance floor had filled up by the time he had walked on stage sporting a bright red leather jacket and his matching hometown Toronto Blue Jays hat. He kicked off his set with a slow burning dark song “Play by Heart”. The energy was quickly turned up with his next song “You and Me,” which brought Diamond Rings and the crowd to dancing during this catchy synth driven song.
Throughout the set members of the audience were yelling out their appreciation for Diamond Rings. As a result, he delivered a very solid set to his fans. He played “Wait and See” and “You Outta Know”, which he requested that the sound engineer make extra loud. Since it was a Monday, the show had to come to a close earlier than the crowd would have liked. Luckily, this did not happen before they were able to snap their shoulders side to side during the smooth guitar sounds of “Something Else.” At the demand of his fans Diamond Rings gave the crowd one last chance to sing along with his encore of “All Yr Songs”.
