Sleigh Bells Make Up For Lost Time In Chicago

Sunday night shows usually bring out a wide range of fans, and Sleigh Bells’ show at The Metro in Chicago was no different. This sold out show was originally supposed to happen on a Friday night in September, but due to Derek Miller injuring his arm, it was rescheduled to a slightly colder, but still as energetic, night in November. The only other time I had been able to catch one the Brooklyn duo’s sets had been at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival and I was so impressed by their live set that I felt obligated to check them out again.

The first thing that struck me when walking in the doors of The Metro was the crowd. It was an 18 and older show, but there it seemed like the age limit was loosely enforced. By the time I moved by the bar in the back, I also noticed there was a fair share of people in their mid-30s. It was a pretty normal split, the very drunk youngsters rockin’ their Chicago Bulls jerseys were up front waiting to dance their asses off, while the older fans were in the back taking shelter early from what would be booming bass and heavy guitars. I tried to float between both and figure out which group was wiser.

Besides the ringing in my ears, my eyes might also be temporarily blinded from the strobes and flashing color lights that enhanced Sleigh Bells set, but these small battle wounds were completely worth it. After Derek Miller and Jason Boyer (who is a touring member of the band) took the stage and quickly tuned their guitars, they met in the middle of the stage for a high five that signified it was on. Once ready, the duo made way for Alexis Krauss to do she does best: rock out.

Every time I see her perform I become more and more impressed with her power as a front woman. Making people want to dance, and sing a long, while at the same time making the guys in the corner of the room want to head bang and wreck stuff. Alexis does it all with a huge smile on her face.

The set they played had the fans in the front who came to dance moving along to the music. It included songs from their first album, such as “Kids,” “Rill Rills,” “Treats,” and from their second “Leader of the Pack” and “Comeback Kid.” The crowd seemed thrilled with the song selection and with the fact that Alexis joined them by crowd surfing twice during the set. The fans easily floated her to and from the stage without any issues.

This band is a great time live. While I don’t think I will be adding them to my everyday playlist, they’ve carved out a niche for themselves within the music world. Wanting to get pumped up before going out, or driving around looking for that high-energy song to really rock to, this band will do it for you.
