Some Awful Bridge: Maybe Some Other Time

Live music is difficult to describe. There’s always the groupthink dynamic that can turn even the most mediocre sounds into a jam-fest. Some Awful Bridge, compromised of Mark Reynolds, Michael Galante, Ari Rothland, Eric Filth, and Michael “Two Step,” played last night at The Delancey, and despite the modest number of attendants they tried their best to give a crowd-worthy performance. This show was the introduction of their new bassist, and you could hear that the band was still grasping their footing and some minor trip-ups made the show a bit underwhelming. The EP, Whaleblanket, they shared with me when I interviewed them had an originality that I found unaffected, but unfortunately that didn’t translate with the weight I thought it would with speakers blaring and vocals roaring. Although credit is due for venturing into live performance and struggling with the draw of anonymity I’ve still seen bands rise to the occasion. We all know that a great song can transport you and make it feel like you are standing alone in a crowded room, but that logic begs to reason that a great band can also transport you to feel like you are in a crowded room when you are standing alone. I set the bar pretty high for Some Awful Bridge, and they don’t quite have the jumps to vault over. . .yet, but an effort is all we can ask.

They covered most of the tracks on their released EP, but the subtle differences between the songs weren’t transformed by the instruments so the sound was a mish-mosh. The drummer, Michael Galante, is quite talented, and without his guidance the rhythm might have been altogether lost.

I think I’ll just listen to processed tracks.
