This week we’re revisiting our coverage of the Austin Psych Fest. The first day of the festival Kristen immediately took to some awesome bands between hitting up $1 Lonestars and salt lick BBQ, including the brilliant ladies of Warpaint. Kristen also reviewed Pyyramids’ (the duo of Tim Nordwind of OK Go and Drea Smith of He Say/She Say) new EP Brightest Darkest Day, and I have to agree that this collaboration is one to keep an ear out for. I’m especially digging the harder hitting track “Do You Think You’re Enough.”
In other news, I got turned onto up and coming singer/songwriter Arum Rae, who has worked with the likes of The Black Keys and Gary Clark Jr, which should give you an idea of the kind of circles and musical genres she rolls with. She also has this smokey blues voice that’s perfect for slow brooding songs like “If I Didn’t Know Better.”
Los Angeles Indie pop band Torches released a video for “When You Gonna,” and they’re also offering it up for free download.
Rush Midnight unveiled their official video for “Don’t Give Me Your Love” it’s a viber. The way they pan “please” about halfway through was a great call. I could def ride a bmx through the city with this blasting from a tiny boombox tied to the handlebars, or something like that.
Brooklyn dream pop girls TEEN shared new track, “Paradise,” off their new EP coming out later this month called Carolina. It’s got this wonky pitch sliding guitar line that comes off as more charming than amateur, and then it spaces out into an effects-laden jam at the end. The band is also kicking off a tour with Eleanor Friedberger in June, so that’s cool too.
Totally new to me is this band called Firehorse, who are already on their sophomore album, off of which they just released new single “Good.” They pull influences from Jeff Buckley and Feist, but they have a strong power pop sound in the vein of the likes of Dressy Bessy.
There’s a new video for Wild Nothing’s “A Dancing Shell,” just to remind everyone that the Empty Estate EP is coming out on May 14 and we’re all going to love it.
The last bit of new video news for this week is from Baby Alpaca, has created stunning visuals for the beautiful and stark tune “Sea of Dreams,” that is actually based off main man Chris Kittrell’s dreams. This guy has some beautiful and amazing imagery in his head.
