It was a good heavy blues and psych week, between copious amounts of festival coverage and new releases, as well as some new weird experimental sounds in the indie underground. Our Evan Clark spent several days at Lollapalooza last week, and witnessed Reignwolf’s set, whom he describes as a “one man blues wrecking crew” (shown above), as well as an amazing moment during Kendrick Lamar’s set. For Kristen, the new Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros album shows them having “really struck a cord with their life values,” and Brigit described Wild Cub’s “full-band fun” in our latest Featured Artist piece.
What else to check out:
Heaven’s Gate’s “Drone” was a completely random find for me, a consequence of spending an excessive amount of time on Soundcloud. Turns out this band is right out of my neighborhood. Thanks, internet.
The Ralph brothers of WRITER are releasing a 7-inch of more fuzzy awesomeness. “IE” is the side A jam, and the whole thing is currently available for pre-order.
Austin buzz band Follow That Bird has regrouped and turned into Mirror Travel, and if woozy psych single “Mexico” is the direction they are going in, it sounds good to me.
Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Tobacco and ex-con Zackey Force Funk make up Demon Queen, and what that sounds like is probably a lot like how you might think – dark, kind of crazy, and something you have to hear.
Brazilian pop psych folk band Boogarins channel legends Os Mutantes more than a little bit, especially on their new single “Lucifernandis.”
Dent May is keeping busy with one new single after another, this time with the groovy flip off track “Let Them Talk.”
Mike Donovan from Sic Alps has announced a solo record, and released new single “New Fieldhand Bop.”
Celestial Shore have more body jerkin’ schizo tunes, and “Valerie” is one of them, off their forthcoming album due out September 3.
Singer songwriter Alela Diane made a beautifully mimimalist live video for her track “Lost Land” when she performed in an amazing looking empty theatre in Paris.
