Things usually don’t surprise me anymore when I head to a show. The whole no parking situation is indicative that everyone and their mother is getting ready for some onstage insanity, and I usually know what’s coming. I was not however prepared for the paparazzi stalking the sidewalk at the Roxy last night- but then again, it WAS Linda Perry performing with her latest project Deep Dark Robot- I should have known.
The Roxy was packed and I’ll give honorable mention to Vanaprasta who kickstarted the night off right with their tunes and the energy pervading the Roxy was strong enough to give the Sunset venue’s patrons a contact high! Sidenote to reader: I am indeed obsessed with Vanaprasta’s tried and true tunes- but last night I was privy to G- (G minus) and I need more of that. Stat. I now return you to your regularly scheduled review.
Post-Vanaprasta leaving the stage and the Roxy was swarming with people anxious to hear tunes from Perry’s latest endeavor Deep Dark Robot’s “8 Songs About A Girl.” Celebs we’re escorted in and quickly GPS’d to their seats, and about 15 minutes and a set change later and we were ready for what Perry was about to divulge to the masses. The tunes were indeed great- “can’t getcha out of my mind” is conveniently titled, seeing as how it’s been stuck on mine since last night. Breaking up may be hard to do, but Perry got 8 great songs out of the deal, which she’s now sharing with us.
Surprisingly Perry thanked the crowd (the wall to wall sea of people really) but in a somewhat twisted turn of events she also stated that if we hadn’t been there, it wouldn’t exactly matter- it’s about the music. She’s been promoting her new project a lot and has played in front of packed houses and in front of maybe ten people- and it’s really all about the music.
Safe to say that no matter how many people show up, or when, she’ll be rocking the crowd set forth in front of her just as she did last night- free of concern for what anyone else thinks, and ready to vent in front of hundreds of her closest acquaintances- and non of us will ever complain. Bring it on Perry, we need a little more 80’s style c’est la vie and a little less concern for what other people think.
