I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers is playing this Tuesday at The Music Hall of Williamsburg AND YOU HAVE TO SEE THEM PLAY. I’ve already previewed one of Ray’s concerts, but for those of you who didn’t take my advice the first time around, here’s added incentive to see her do her magic: she’s playing with Man Man, the eccentric Gods of indie rock.

I saw Man Man live last Winter when they were opening for Gogol Bordello. I thought they blew Eugene Hütz and crew out of the water. Dressed in movie prisoner outfits (shirts with black and white stripes) and covered with war paint, they banged on marimbas, drums and keyboards, played saxophones and kazoos, sang and yelped, all over energetic grooves and looping harmonies. Frontman Honus Honus (real name Ryan Kattner) leapt from keyboard to vocal mic, at one point going off stage to change into a dress. They were a circus act that also happened to be an unbelievably tight band. Man Man proved that as long as you have an addicting beat, strong melodies, and a good connection to the audience, you can try out anything and everything and people will dig it. They rank alongside Animal Collective as experimental indie Godfathers that half the bands starting out now aspire to emulate.
Man Man has reached that awkward point in their life where they’re popular enough to be considered passé by a lot of their early fans, but weird enough to never break into mainstream success. They’re still absolutely amazing, and paired up with Shilpa Ray, I can hardly imagine a more exciting show.
Tickets are $16 in advance, and $18 at the door, and the show is 21+.
