The Dulcitone Files EP is a beautifully recorded set of stripped-down acoustic versions of songs from the band’s recently released LP, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy. The versions on the EP are a more intimate look at such standoutTSAITA tracks as the previously mentioned “Looking Through,” as well as “Clear Eye Clouded Mind” and “When I Was Young” among others.  The EP was originally available on an extremely limited basis for those who purchased The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy at indie retailers.

The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy is the trio’s seventh record and, besides being a top five record at College and #1 at Specialty, it’s been receiving rave reviews everywhere. “Nada Surf have always had an ace in Matthew Caws’ voice,” wroteFilter, while the Boston Globe was won over by what they described as the album’s “non stop joy.” “Thanks to grungy guitars raging in the background,” said Alternative Press, “‘Clear Eye Clouded Mind’ thrashes like ’80s bar-band legends the Replacements, while the pogo-pop highlight ‘Looking Through’ and messy power-pop gem ‘The Future’ crackle with energy.” Relix noted that for a band who last released an album of originals four years ago, “it’s notably refreshing to receive any new tracks – let alone a set of songs as perfectly composed as the ones here.” NPR hailed the album as “tremendous — full of big, blooming rock that practically glows with generosity.”

Nada Surf’s lineup for 15 years has been and still is Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar), Daniel Lorca (bass) and Ira Elliot (drums), though on this album, as on recent covers album if i had a hi-fi and the tour that followed, they invited guitarist Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Death of Samantha) to join in the proceedings. Chris Shaw (Wilco, Brendan Benson, Elvis Perkins in Dearland and Super Furry Animals) was brought in to produce and record, having worked with the band before when he mixed their hit song, “Always Love.”

Nada Surf begins its first North American tour in support of TSAITA today in Los Angeles, CA, at The Music Box. The tour ends in Washington, DC, on April 10 at the 9:30 Club. The second leg of tour dates begins June 19 in Lancaster, PA, and ends July 5 at the Rams Head in Baltimore, MD.
