New York – Grammy-nominated rap superstar WALE returns with the soon to be smash hit of the summer: “My P.Y.T.” The single is now available at all digital retailers and streaming partners today. “My P.Y.T” debuted earlier this morning, with an every-hour-on-the-hour world premiere across all iHeart Media mainstream radio stations and websites.
Produced by The Dope Boyz, “My P.Y.T” is the first single from Wale’s highly anticipated 5th studio album, SHINE, due out this Fall via Maybach Music Group/Atlantic Records. Wale told Entertainment Weekly:
My P.Y.T is actually my first rhythmic record since my very first single “Chillin” with Gaga. I’ve put out singles like “The Matrimony,” “Bad,” and “Lotus Flower Bomb,” which ended up getting me a Grammy nomination, but this is my first upbeat, “for the clubs” record in years so the process was a lot different. I took extra time on each and every line, making sure it appealed to a specific but diverse audience at the same time.
SHINE - short for Still Here Ignoring Negative Energy - is the follow-up to 2015’s critically acclaimed The Album About Nothing, the collaborative album with comedy icon, Jerry Seinfeld. In The Album About Nothing, Seinfeld plays the role of the album’s conscience. The momentous album was the third and final installment in Wale’s famed “About Nothing” mixtape trilogy, which was inspired by his favorite TV show, Seinfeld. The album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums,” “Top Current Albums,” “Top R&B/Hip-Hop,” and “Top Rap Albums” charts, with Billboard crowning the collection Wale’s “strongest album yet.” The album featured collaborations with Usher (“The Matrimony”), J.Cole (“The Middle Finger”), and Jeremih (“The Body”).
Best New Bands first discovered Wale back in 2011 with Ambition, which featured the Grammy-nominated, Gold-certified hit single “Lotus Flower Bomb (feat. Miguel).” Daniel Kohn wrote Ambition is “sharp, focused and true to the core of Wale’s sound, which is based in go-go music (a sound synonymous with DC).” Ambition was the follow-up to Wale’s first proper LP, Attention Deficit, which was released on Interscope in 2009.
Wale has come a long way since releasing his Gold-certified sophomore album, and 2015 proved to be a busy, successful year for the Washington, D.C. native. In addition to the release of The Album About Nothing, Wale partook in several high-profiled events at The White House, including First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Reach Higher” initiative for higher education, as well as becoming the first rapper to open the State Of The Union, performing right before President Obama’s final State Of The Union Address. Along with sneaker boutique Villa, Wale released a limited edition collection of sneakers including the Asics “Bottle Rocket” and the Timberland “Gift Box Set,” with additional releases coming later this Summer. The thriving entrepreneur and his manager Leonard Brooks also partnered with StockX, an actual stock market for sneakers, co-founded by Dan Gilbert, to revolutionize the way people buy not only sneakers, but all e-commerce products. Wale continues to develop and expand his EVERY BLUE MOON brand that includes musicians, comedians, screenwriters, as well as plans to launch a festival.
