I first found out about Twilight Sleep when I went to scope out another band at the Viper Room (Useless Keys) and was totally, and quite unexpectedly, blown away by TS. Tracy Marcellino’s vocals are unavoidably entrancing and enchantingly haunting, and even she seemed completely enveloped by the power of TS’ music as she swayed on the Viper Room stage.
Despite technical difficulties, and an uncooperative synthesizer the set was still insanely great and I had their songs resonating in my head far after I vacated the Viper.
I met Tracy at a local coffee joint a few days later and the totally down to earth tee rocking girl was a breath of fresh air (as is her music!) Aside from the usual questions, I learned that the creative former English major has more than melodic tunes, her lyrics are effortlessly poetic as well. Now as I’m more of a post-it kind of girl, Marcellino is more of a scraps of paper napkins inscribed with a line here or there kind of chick.
More than anything I was happily enlightened that no- their name has nothing to do with the way too popular Twilight book series. Instead, it was is referring to the drugs used to induce an artificial state of mind where pain is not felt and the memory of pain is non existent entirely, appropriately befitting of the band that transports its audience to a different level where one inevitably leaves feeling slightly different than before, in a glorious rush of mind altering madness.
Speaking of mind altering madness (and to reiterate the incestuous nature of the music industry!) we ended up chatting about bands we were both familiar with- one of them being Amusement Parks On Fire, who we totally saw rock at Filter magazine’s Culture Collide recently! Uber nonchalantly, we talked about their latest album, and with a laugh Tracy said that she had inadvertently named one of their tracks. After her car had broken down on the 5 at about 4 a.m., she and a friend busted out flashlights and created their own “flashlight planetarium”- because what else do you do while waiting for roadside assistance in the middle of the night? When APOF said they needed a name for a track she suggested that- which has nothing to do with the song itself- but makes for one hell of an awesome story!
All in all I’m hoping Twilight Sleep starts jamming more often throughout L.A.- add that request to my holiday wishlist. Can’t wait that long? You can check TS out at “Silverlake in Pomona” on Friday, December 10 at the Glass House! Until then get your TS fill at www.myspace.com/twilightsleep!
