Mixtape #7

The-Yellow-Dogs-Ali

We’re back with the first Mixtape of the new year, chocked with the first fresh tracks of 2013! Already we’re seeing a good deal of electro-pop and EDM tunes coming out so far from producers and musicians like Phaseone and FLOTE, along with some fresh punk and heavier rock. It’s an interesting wave we’re riding into the new year right now. Could make for even more interesting mashups per chance…

We’ve also included our first Artist of the Week of the year, California’s Rival Sons. Is it just me or is that press photo hard to take seriously? Regardless of whatever ironic awkward photo image that’s saying, their songs do sound much better than that. Katrina interviewed The New Division, and we’ve got their track with Keep Shelly In Athens on the mix. Daniel reviewed The Living Sisters’ new album, and the cutesy track “How Are You Doing” has lots and lots and lots of girl harmonies. And a little guitar. The Yellow Dogs are on here too – they were the last live review of last year, but “This City” is still a jam to be looking toward 2013 with as inspiration.

Fresh tracks are:

Iceage “Coalition” – first track from the punk Danes off their brand new record You’re Nothing out in February. These dudes have much happening in the coming months, so this probably won’t be the last mention of Iceage on BNB.

Phaseone – “It’s Not Forever” – in this concise, simple phrase that gets repeated there’s a good deal of depth. This track is off a 7 inch split with Parisian, available now for pre-order.

Lucius “Don’t Just Sit There” – The melody of the chorus mixed with the harmony between frontwomen Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe is infectious like this flu thing people are talking about. They just did an NPR tiny desk concert with this song included, and the whole is really good, in a subtly sinking in kind of way. See the whole Tiny Desk Concert here.

Fol Chen – “200 Words” from their upcoming third album, The False Alarms, due out March 19. Here’s the first tension-filled electro pop taste.

FLOTE “The Cascades” – Philly-based producer, who is also a member of the Altered Ego Collective, released his Sacred Wisdom LP this past December, but the track “Cascades” was just released this past week on XLR8R, and thus, bringing this electro groove to our attention.

Memory Tapes “Sheila” – This one is off his latest full length that was released in December, but the video has just been unveiled.
