New York – Brussels-based band Robbing Millions have premiered their track “8 Is The Figure That I Like Most”. Robbing Millions will record 8 unique versions of “8 Is The Figure That I Like Most” which will be pressed on 8 7″ vinyls for the Brussels-based label I Will Play This Song Once Again Records.
All the way from Molenbeek, aka the “hellhole” of Brussels, please welcome to the stage: Robbing Millions!
It’s 2014 and Lucien Fraipont and Gaspard Ryelandt – the former until then only known as a young impro-jazz guitar virtuoso, the latter drawing his way through life as a cartoonist- throw 6 Garageband demos on Bandcamp together called ‘Ages and Sun’.
Surprisingly, ‘Ages and Sun’ is nót jazz but a full blown pop affair, and the songs, loaded with syncopated, psychedelic rhythms and breezy lo-fi synths, immediately buzz their way through the Belgian and French blogosphere.
Live offers come in and Robbing Millions ‘the band’ – assembled in less than one week after a couple of phone calls – find themselves playing at several prestigious European festivals only months after their start-up (Le Printemps De Bourges, Boomtown, Paléo Festival, Pukkelpop, Eurosonic; etc).
Robbing Millions’ live shows quickly become a universe on their own, with wild and spacy performances (crazy dinosaur dances? check!). Invitations to support Palma Violets, Metronomy and Babyshambles arrive and the band releases a second EP ‘Lonely Carnivore’ at the end of 2014, which brings them more than 70 shows throughout Benelux, France, the UK and Switzerland. In 2015 Robbing Millions start working on their debut album and 10 months later the band is on a plane off to Brooklyn for a 2 week mixing session with no less than wizard Nicolas Vernhes behind the mixing desk (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, The War on Drugs). At the same time Robbing Millions are playing all over NYC with no less than 8 shows during the CMJ Music Marathon festival.
Robbing Millions’ debut album features 10 clever and adventurous tracks on which Robbing Millions dig deep into pop history, winking to innovators as Can and Robert Wyatt, but also sharing a love for the psychedelic pop brilliance of The Flaming Lips and the fuzzy slacker pop of Pavement.
The tracks shift between dream drop (‘8 is the Figure that I Like the Most’, ‘The Mountain’), weirdo Euro-style psych rock (WAIGW, Fall from Your Chair, What Makes me Feel Old) and Ariel Pink-esque melodies (In the No Air, Inspector, Dreams Like Photographs).
‘8 is The Figure that I like the Most’ is the first track taken from Robbing Millions self-titled debut album, which is set for release on August 29th through Play It Again Sam ([PIAS]).
