Los Angeles – Riley Biederer won’t quit until she’s the next big pop star. Besides her sensual vocals and her relatable lyrics, it is that confidence that makes the 18-year-old Atlanta-raised songstress so compelling.
Riley first grabbed our attention on Reverbnation with addicting videos of covers like Lana Del Rey’s “Summer Time Sadness,” but it’s her songwriting abilities on original songs that’s keeping us listening. While plenty of teenage girls would cry over a tub over ice cream after a breakup, she uses her broken heart to inspire her catchy tunes.
With the sass of Rihanna and the vocal range of Jo Jo, Riley’s bold beats and clever song lyrics celebrate a kind independence that could easily turn into an album of girl power-themed anthems. Songs like “Stupid” will definitely make the hips shake and tunes like “Broken Me” can relate to anyone who has endured a failed relationship.
The guitarist and pianist also has a sensual and raspy voice that sounds far bigger than her petite frame and has a control that seems well beyond her age. Her YouTube acoustic rendition of Rihanna’s “Stay,” only accompanied by a keyboard and a picturesque field, is both emotionally-driven and startlingly restrained. Her voice has a defining presence that doesn’t mimic Rihanna, but displays a personality and style that is entirely her own.
There are many, many young women who want to be the next Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, or Katy Perry, but Riley has a self-awareness that is refreshing. Even more unbelievable is that her unique sound is only just beginning to develop. Like her famous predecessors, the soloist doesn’t want to just sing her songs; she wants to fill arenas for unforgettable choreography and flashy lights.
Apparently, we aren’t the only ones who are hooked on Riley either. Her fan base on Facebook has grown to over 52,000 “likes,” she is managed by Elton John’s Rocket Music, and she just signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV. All that is left for Riley to blow up is a record deal and an album release. The star-in-the-making explained, “I’ve been recording for a long time and I have a lot of stuff ready, we’re just waiting for the time and place. “
In the company of all that support and her own stamina, the right time and place might just be sooner than she thinks.
