Day 2 of SXSW: Sacramento’s Sister Crayon at Malaia

Remeber the name Sister Crayon, because you’re going to see/hear about them everywhere if you haven’t already. I reviewed their show at The Echo with Fol Chen as well as when they opened for El Ten Eleven at The Bootleg, and both times I was completely enthralled by the Sacramento foursome’s performance. Their song “Here We Never Die” even placed second on BestNewBands.com’s Top Ten Songs of 2010 and you can sample it below along with “Anti-Psalm“.  There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that they would kill it in Austin, but I was a little bit skeptical about the crowd at when I walked in at 12:15am. The bar was packed to the gills with bromancers and cougars-in-training, and at first the audience seemed more suited to a taping of TRL than a potent blend of trip hop, soul, and indie-electro.  Besides, how exactly do you measure a band’s success at a huge festival peppered with promising artists? Well for starters, if you begin your set in a crowded bar and everyone shuts up, you know you’ve got something interest-piquing. If by the end of the first song, there are drunk bar patrons not just interested in your music but front and center, then you know you’ve really got something good. By the end of the third song, Sister Crayon had a huge crowd clustered around the small stage, and several audience members were bobbing their heads and arms almost on top of the various keyboards and MPCs.

I have a feeling that these guys are only going to get bigger and better, and I’m hoping that I get to see them play a huge festival in the next year at the latest. Catch them now while you can still see them up close and personal, and don’t be afraid to reach out to the band after the show! They are some of the most gracious and down to earth artists (and people in general) I have had the pleasure of meeting. Sister Crayon‘s full-length debut Bellow is now available on iTunes. After a busy schedule down in Austin, they hurried back to Los Angeles for a performance at The Echo on Sunday, March 21st.
