Preview: All Tomorrow’s Parties

Frank-Ocean

Normally held in Asbury Park, NJ, this year’s All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival, being held from September 21st thru the 23rd,  has been moved to Pier 36 in Manhattan, NYC. Curated by Greg Dulli, the lineup is the best eclectic mix of the dark and mysterious, scintillating musical worlds. This includes everything from the ear-shattering Lightning Bolt to the booty shakin’ playlists of DJ Questlove. All Tomorrow’s Parties is known for being well-curated with some of the best examples of musical substance, and once again they’ve got discerning music fans covered.

Arguably one of the most substantial artists on the current hip hop and R&B scene that has really started to blow up this year is Frank Ocean, who has secured top billing for the festival. Greg Dulli must be a fan, since he covered Ocean’s “Love Crimes” single seemingly before most people had even heard it

Of course Dulli’s own enduring band The Afghan Whigs have a main slot at the festival. Even better for their enduring fans is that this performance will be the first show of Afghan Whigs’ first full tour in 13 years. It’s a good bet that the show will be like a back catalogue of all their best songs, and most likely the aforementioned “Love Crimes” cover. Hopefully without that one guy singing off-key, though.

The Antlers are pretty well known by now, which also means their live show is especially potent. These guys honed their show by taking depression ethereal songs to beautiful euphoric heights. They’ve since broadened their range, and guess what? It’s still amazing.

The atmosphere that Braids can create live is what makes this band worth putting on your must check out list. They are one of the bands interviewed by ATP, and are also embarking on a run of shows in anticipation of their forthcoming album due out next year.

Autolux recently put out their second album since 2004, and it’s worth checking out live. This band is a slow burner, but once they start digging in, it’s like an arrowhead that you just have to push through all the way.

Tickets range from $60 to $199, and are still available for all single days or three-day passes all weekend. Stay up to the minute on ATP’s Twitter, and check out their playlist of the festival lineup to get pumped.
