FYF Fest takes place this weekend (which is Labor Day weekend), September 1 and 2 at the L.A. State Historic Park in downtown Los Angeles. If you went to the adventures of Pete & Pete REUNION this past Tuesday, presented by FYF along with Cinefamily and featuring the reunited Polaris (!), we want photos and anecdotes! That had to have been one of the best things ever, since Mr. Tastee and the invention of the Orange Lazarus. Drink up, Prosthetics!
Brilliant childhood nostalgia aside, more great bands have been added to the festival lineup since we covered the initial announcement. The Faint will now be closing one of the main stages on Sunday Sept. 2, and Glass Candy, King Tuff, and The Orwells are now on the bill as well. Aside from that, we’d like to highlight a few more:
Begin your vocal warm-ups now, because the chorus of Nite Jewel’s single “One Second of Love” will have you trying to harmonize along into your hairbrush…or water bottle, or whathaveyou. I may be way off base, but I’m feeling some throwback to freestyle, in the vein of Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam. Alright, maybe let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here, but you could still totally duplicate all Lisa Lisa’s dance moves to this.
Make sure you’re at the Main St. Stage on Saturday at 1:30pm, to get your dose of life-affirming jangly pop rock with a hint of surf vibe, graciously provided by the Los Angeles-based foursome The Soft Pack.
Kishi Bashi is the epic orchestral solo project of K Ishibashi (see what he did there), who is also the singer of NYC-based synth rock band Jupiter One. Ishibashi loops the sounds of gleeful angels in an enchanted forest while showcasing his violin skills, and his music has the potential to take your mind through a portal to an alternate realm of all-encompassing jubilation.
In the mood for some savvy vibraphone action? Spencer Krug has you covered with his current solo project Moonface. We’ve covered him before, so you can get an idea of what his live set is like from reading our reviews of his shows in NYC and in L.A.
There have been many bands breaking out this year that could have been and still be the perfect soundtrack to your summer, and the California surfer-cowboys in Allah-Las definitely make that cut.
And lastly, I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Future Islands is honestly one of THE best live shows I have ever seen. Ever. The end. We’ll leave you with a clip of their performance last year at FYF:
