Artist Profile: Florence and the Machine

Florence and the Machine, already a success in frontwoman Florence Welch’s home country of England, has been bursting to the surface everywhere I turn in recent months. I heard inklings of the powerful rock/soul/pop group last summer and fall, and now Ms. Welch’s songs are appearing on my favorite TV shows (So You Think You Can Dance…ahem), sprouting up as new music to watch on MTV, and most recently accompanying the Eat, Pray, Love movie trailers. The world seems to be slowly catching on to the magic of this fiery-haired British songstress and her crew, with very good reason.

The band’s 2009 debut album, Lungs, is a full-length masterpiece of elaborately-adorned pop songs showcasing Welch’s powerful, evocative voice. “Kiss With A Fist” is Welch’s ode to punk-rock, “Dog Days Are Over” is a triumphant girl-power anthem, and “Cosmic Love” is a dreamy orchestral gem. Simple is not a word that applied to Florence and the Machine. Songs are full of strong drum beats, layered vocals, and sparkly flourishes, but somehow Welch’s commanding lyrics and voice always shine through.

In the sea of british female vocalists of late, Florence Welch stands out as a dynamic and creative force at only 24. Live, Welch is known for her eccentric costumes (sparkly, fringed jumpsuit anyone?) and compelling stage presence, both of which seem like necessities to match her addictive and enthralling power-pop tracks. Witness the magic below and try not to be inexplicably captivated. I dare you.
