I recently discovered a Brooklyn band that has a passion to ignite dance parties anywhere and everywhere. This group is Body Language, which is quite possibly the best name ever for an electronic dance outfit. Their sound has evolved from the soundtrack of weekly dance parties in Brooklyn basements to currently sharing the stage with the likes of Passion Pit, Little Boots, La Roux, School of Seven Bells and Theophilus London. Body Language is composed of MAGIC: M – Matthew Young, A – Angelica Bess, G – Grant Wheeler, I – Ian Chang, C – Computer. In an effort to learn a bit more about the band I spoke with Ian Chang for an interview.
Dan Cordie: How did each of you come together to form Body Language?
Ian Chang: Matt and Grant have been working together on various projects since they were college freshman. In 2007, they started spinning a weekly party at a little dive bar called Vegas BLVD, which picked up quite a bit of steam. Around that time, they started making remixes of early 90s pop tunes to spin at the party and got bit by the dance bug. Soon enough, they started composing originals alongside Angelica and started spinning those as well. Once they moved to Brooklyn, they met me by working together as the backing band for Theophilus London.
DC: Where is your favorite place to throw a dance party?
IC: In the kitchen while making sandwiches.
DC: Who are some current bands that are inspiring the music that you are currently creating?
IC: James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Junior Boys, Toro Y Moi, Little Dragon, St. Vincent, Animal Collective… list goes on.
DC: What has been your favorite show that you have played?
IC: We recently opened for Janelle Monae at Hamilton College. That show was so much fun that we all cried a little, even Grant.
DC: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
IC: Harry Belafonte
DC: What has been your favorite album release of 2011?
IC: For me, St. Vincent takes the cake with Strange Mercy.
DC: Can you tell us about the strangest crowd that you have played a show for?
IC: It’s always weird to play to no one, especially since we like to freak out on stage. It’s just awkward.
DC: What has been the biggest struggle you have faced while on the road?
IC: A sandstorm in Arizona put a 5-hour hitch in our travels. We fought back by blasting Darude’s “Sandstorm” and dancing in our car.
DC: Could you give me your top three songs you play when you want to set the dance floor on fire?
IC: “Falling Out,” “Sandwiches” and a new unreleased disco track, “Lose My Head.”
DC: Are there any shows on your upcoming tour that you are really stoked to be playing?
IC: All of em!
DC: What do you have planned for the upcoming year?
IC: Working on a new record, SXSW, more touring and perhaps our first little trip to the UK! (fingers crossed)
