The Angry Orts Rock The Woods

The Angry Orts are neither angry nor orts. In case you don’t know what orts, are, they are, essentially, table scraps. If The Angry Orts’s show was a buffet, there would be nary a scrap to be found. I caught their show at The Woods last night and found myself drowned in a crowd that filled the venue to capacity. The opening bands, Tope and World’s Greatest Ghosts, had the audience dancing, but The Angry Orts made them convulse!

The set began with “We R Electric,” also the lead song on their latest self-titled CD. They certainly R. Check out the video below to see The Angry Orts for yourself.

The Angry Orts are fun indie rock with loads of personality. Lead singer Sara Hernandez steals the show with her on stage antics and friendly connection with the crowd. Her husband (love that the band has a married couple!) Matthew Hernandez rocks on the drums, Aaron Ettlin shines on guitar and James Puryear grooves on bass.

I was delighted by The Angry Orts. Their sound is honest and raw, and immediately relatable. They’re not trying too hard. They’re not trying to be rock stars. And because of that, they are. My favorite part of the night by far was the audience chanting ‘orts, orts, orts!’ after almost every song. I’m not sure what the song is called on the video below, but it was super fun, with the audience clapping along.

Your next chance to see The Angry Orts is not far away. They’ll be at The Alberta Rose Theatre on February 3 and playing Mondays on the Mall on Valentine’s Day. That means you can enjoy them while you’re waiting for the bus! How cool is that!?
