This is the first installment of our new weekly mixtape feature. We’ll be putting together mixtapes, highlighting bands we covered during the previous week and other fresh tracks we discovered during the week. We’ll also be including some photos of the bands we’re talking about and links to their sites and to our original articles.
Daniel Kohn caught Delta Spirit at the Wiltern this past week, who he chose over Cat Power and Titus Andronicus. Listen to an example of what influenced his discerning music buds with “California” below.
“All the Lights” is the brand new single from Fort Lean, off their latest EP that we reviewed.
“Presence of Mind” is still echoing in my mind after seeing The Fresh & Onlys at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
JAN, the solo project of Kim Talon (from the band Eagle & Talon, whose best contribution to the world might be this hilarious video with Reggie Watts) released her debut full length this week, with the single “Red Crust Ow” premiering on BUST Magazine. She’s got a ’90s PJ Harvey vibe to her tunes.
La Sera Charmed Zach Klasson when he caught the band at Mississippi Studios, as part of their tour in support of sophomore album Sees the Light. “Break My Heart” is the latest track off that.
Los Angeles-based indie pop band Youngblood Hawke was our Artist of the Week, and “Stars (Hold On)” is off their self-titled EP out now.
My Morning Jacket’s frontman Jim James has released the Retro-futuristic “Know Till Now” as the first single off his solo album Regions of Light and Sound of God, due out in February.
