Mixtape 10: Palma Violets, The Growlers, Bellamaine, Hollis Brown and more

Palma-Violets-fist-5x7

Here we go with Mixtape #10! This past week was heavy on the psych shoegaze and blues side, with coverage of Writer and Palma Violets, our Artist of the Week The Growlers, plus an album review from our new Seattle contributor Brigit Anderson, who had some nice words for BellaMaine’s new EP. Other recent jams included are:

Besnard Lakes, “People of the Sticks” – they’ve got a new album coming out, they’re embarking on a tour with Suuns, and they’ve got this new track.

Hollis Brown, “Nightfall” is the second track the band has shared off their forthcoming release, On The Train, and it’s a nice little rollicking along tune for the long ride home.

Angel Olsen, “The Waiting” – this bluesy singer/songwriter may be channeling Patsy Cline juust a little, and has announced a tour in support of her album that came out in December. See all dates here.

Caveman has released the new single “In the City,” off their brand new record coming out in April. They’ve also got a North American headlining tour planned starting the end of this month – check the dates.

Pond – “Giant Tortoise.” Gotta love the new psych rock sounds coming out of Australia these days. These guys are labelmates with Tame Impala, and when you click this track you’ll hear the connection immediately. If you’ve never heard of these guys and want to hear more, we also recommend listening to the flute flourished “broke my cool

Phosphorescent, “Song for Zula.” This is an artist who I don’t believe has ever made a song that didn’t make me feel my heart beat like a kick drum in my chest, and this song is no different. On this first track from his upcoming record Muchacho, he borrows half a line from Bette Midler’s “The Rose,” and embarks on a steadily unfolding story, describing what it’s like to have an experience you will never forget, and also know that you’ll never have it the same way again.
