Mixtape 41 – CMJ 2013 Edition: Lorde, Kishi Bashi, Crocodiles And More

New York – We’re gearing up big time for the CMJ 2013 Music Marathon, and this playlist serves as both a look at some new music and recent coverage on BestNewBands.com, along with a preview of music to check out during the festival. First up though, James reviewed Lorde’s highly impressive debut, Pure Heroine, citing that it “lives up to all of the hype surrounding Lorde and then some.” Caroline conducted a delightful interview with the quirky and brilliant Kishi Bashi, and our Featured Artist was SoCal noise pop punks Crocodiles.

Now for the exciting CMJ news: For the first time ever, BestNewBands.com is putting on not one, but TWO Official Showcases! Our Tuesday night headliner Shillpa Ray has a brand new track, “Mother Is A Misanthrope,” and the noisy garage awesomeness of our Friday night bands will get your heels kickin, so we have previews of all of that in the mix.

Also playing the music marathon this year is Haerts, who just released their Hemiplegia EP, and announced a string of CMJ shows. I recently saw them opening for Washed Out, and all their songs translate beautifully on stage. This also means that they definitely have more than just the four songs on the EP, so a full length must be in the works. Until then, live shows it is.

My Midnight Heart has shared the stage with the likes of Solange and Blood Orange, which goes a long way of telling you what you need to know about this band – a little bit throwback, a little romantic, and a lot of smooth.

The Stargazer Lilies sound like a pure shoegaze band, and they are. They take it back to the days of Slowdive, and even a bit of Coctaeu Twins in there. They’ll be playing Silent Barn on the first night of the fest.

The Delancey hosts an annual “Aussie BBQ” during CMJ, which is actually a bbq during the day and shows during the day and night. I reckon Aussies know how to do bbq, and also indie pop, from the looks of the lineup. Gossling is one of those acts, who has found placements in US TV shows like American Horror Story and Nashville, and are finally playing their first shows stateside during the music marathon.
