Cambridge, Mass., home to Harvard University, can now also be known as home of indie synth pop band, Passion Pit. The band’s five members, all of whom attended Boston area universities, had a breakthrough this year with “Take A Walk,” from their second album, Gossamer. The single’s success was spurred partly by its use in a Taco Bell commercial, which saw singer/band empresario Michael Angelakos’ blending of catchy commercial synth pop with haunting dark lyrics, which he claims to have been inspired by his grandparents plight. The song became one of the most popular in the Passion Pit catalog and the pioneering band took another step forward in what’s sure to be the beginning of a long career.

The song’s popularity led to a lauded appearance on Saturday Night Live this past October. If that’s not enough, coming in February: a headlining date at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Considering the tenuous state of the band before the album was released, this is a victory that can’t be taken lightly. The success of “Talk A Walk” rightfully lands it as the Best Song of 2012.
