Bass Brunch, Mosswood Park, Oakland, CA

I was served up a healthy dose of electronic jams this weekend at Bass Brunch at Mosswood Park in Oakland, CA.  Every second Sunday all Summer 2011, a gathering of Oakland’s finest dub droppin’, beat bumbin’, and bass blastin’ DJ’s share two stages inside the park.

The upper level lawn stage hosted numerous local acts that featured dub step, house, break beat, and techno.  This main-stage was full of sun, hula-hoopers, dancers and bass.  The lower amphitheatre stage is where I caught up with Click.Boom.

Click.Boom is a San Francisco based electro-house, techno, dub duo. Using Ableton Live loops, Pat Gilligan and Renzo Gorrio trigger sounds and effects over fresh beats, completely improvised.  The result is an incredible production of music engineering.  “We do a lot of tricks with the mixer, sending delays back into the mixer, it’s a classic dub trick”, said Gilligan. “A couple of my influences are Robagwruhme, Richie Hawtin, Ben Klock, and Berlin and London-based Techno.”  Click.Boom gave me a complete and well-balance serving of bass for my appetite. The day wacs topped off by the side-venue’s natural ambience and acoustics.

The lower amphitheatre is impressive and is a great venue because of the acoustic nature of the sunken stage.  I caught up with Jon Hrabko, who runs the side-stage and also performed under the name Radar.  “It’s a perfect place for a show,” said Hrabko.  The natural acoustics of the small lowered stadium make it ideal for performers, listeners, and local neighbors.  The sound stays inside of the auditorium and is not very loud once you exit out of the top.   Hrabko realized a number of local-park enjoyers were in attendance as well, “Bringing out the community is important”.

I highly recommend this Oakland-day festival, which will be held again June 12th, July 10th, and August 14th at Mosswood Park, Oakland, CA from 12-6pm.  “Bass Brunch – free music and art in the park” is sponsored by Spiril.net.
