Lying in the nexus of Capitol Hill’s most vibrant area is Neumos, a diverse club that hosts bands of both renown and obscurity. The Seattle club, Moe’s Mo Roc’n Café, was formed in 1992 and enjoyed eleven prosperous years until 2003 when it was re-launched as Neumos (get it ‘New Moes’). Since then it has moved from a notable figure on the landscape to a sought after venue for local musicians.

Events such as the Summer Kickoff Party firmly cement Neumos as a locally-centric club. The venue contributes and opens its doors for celebrated events such as the Capitol Hill Block Party and this week’s Decibel festival. The multitude of shows and festivals hosted by Neumos spans a vast range of genres and caters to a myriad of clientele.

“There’s a great hip hop scene in Seattle. There also seems to be a trend of soft indie folk. We book anything that people want to see and anything that’s awesome, regardless of trend or genre,” Alicia Amiri said, Marketing Manager for Neumos.

Despite supporting local artists both Neumos and its previous incarnation ‘Moe’s’ have hosted many famed acts. In 1996 Neil Young performed the debut of his Mirror Ball album in collaboration with Pearl Jam and many artists including The Presidents of the United States referred to Moe’s as their home base.

When Moe’s fell on hard times and was forced to dissolve a major feature of the Seattle music scene went as well. Due to its previous popularity the venue was able to resurface and reach a level of success that mirrored Moe’s. Since the resurgence bands such as Muse, The Raconteurs and MGMT have performed at Neumos, as well as a host of comedy acts including Patton Oswald and Tim and Eric.

“[Neumos is] known for great sound and staff, it’s also a great place to see awesome up and coming bands… I think we’re known for rock and indie rock but we really do any kind of show,” Alicia Amiri said.

Tied to the concert stage is Moe Bar offering a full range of drinks and some live music in the form of a local DJ. Moe Bar is quite small and has been noted for having a relaxed, cozy atmosphere, offering some relief from the hectic mayhem of the live stage. The Pike Street Fish Fry sits neatly next to the entrance of Moe’s Bar providing modestly priced late-night seafood, grilled meat dishes and vegetarian meals.

Outside of rare occasions such as the Summer Kickoff Party, Neumos is exclusively available to 21+ ages. The price for concert tickets ranges greatly from a $5 to $40, emulating the vast array of bands that take to the stage.

Neumos will be hosting a section of the Decibel festival this week and presenting the finale event on Sunday. A brief mention of some noteworthy shows was given by Alicia Amiri; “Next month we have Dungen, Starfucker, Gaslamp Killer, Showcases for City Arts Fest, Isobel Campbell and Gary Numan on Halloween.
