Time feels like it’s starting to slow in the summer heat, and maybe because it’s also too hot to headbang, this week’s mix is more on the chill vibe. Make your mind wander with psych folkers Rose Windows, who was the subject of both a live review and an album review. Both were highly effusive that they’re getting another mixtape placement, this time with the totally psyched out “Native Dreams.” Also the subject of an album review was Béisbol, who was going to get a mention on this mix either way, because “Nothing Strange” is a breezy summer jam that needs to be passed around like a joint. Typhoon landed in our Breaking News section with new single “Young Fathers,” with “the sense of borrowed time and urgency.”
Also under the breezy summer jam category is “Here She Comes,” the first single from Auckland, NZ lo-fi jangly pop band Ghost Wave. They filmed a video for it too, full of hazy summer colors.
Dent May, king of the adorables, has a brand new single called “Born Too Late” off his forthcoming album Warm Blanket, due out August 27.
Also on the southern gentleman crooner tip, Idiot Glee is back with his new release, “Pinkwood.
NGHBRS are releasing their debut full length that was recorded live in a house believed to be haunted, with no internet or television. Hear what that could possibly sound like with “1990.”
Los Angeles noir pop band Leftover Cuties have a silly name, but often I find that sometimes bands with the silliest names make some of the most interesting music.
Youth Lagoon unveiled a new video for his sprawling track “Mute,” off Wondrous Bughouse, released this past Spring. The birds flying out of the tree are timed nicely. He’s also extended his summer tour, which is an ace move since his deep-sinking songs make a marvelous soundtrack to light up faces.
