The White Panda and Hoodie Allen Live Experience

Last week, I attempted to describe to you the vibe from The White Panda/Hoodie Allen and G.Riot show that ended The White Panda’s tour. As you read this, The White Panda are holed up eating bamboo and perfecting the tracks for their hotly-anticipated next album. I’ve been following their growth as a unit for three years, and with their sophomore LP Rematch, I was sold on the validity of the group. Mash-up is not a joke. It’s science, it’s art, it’s music for music lovers, and I personally cannot wait to see what new sounds they come up with. But I digress.

Capturing the atmosphere of the December 28th, 2010 show was certainly more challenging than any other review I have written until this point. How do you capture the energy of a young, raucous crowd? Put more simply, how do you capture the animation of Hoodie Allen? How do you convey that people knew the songs from Hoodie’s “Pep Rally” mixtape, word for word? How do you say that The White Panda will put on one of your favorite shows in recent memory, without sounding like one of the most biased music writers of all-time?

These were the obstacles placed in front of me before I even entered the Highline Ballroom last Tuesday, but once the show began, I realized I was clearly inside the belly of some musical juggernauts. I planned on providing some visual aids in my review, but they weren’t quite where they needed to be. They’re ready now, and honestly, they’re too good to keep to myself. So, enjoy, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.
