Madison Makes Beautiful Noise

Don’t dismiss Madison as a regurgitation of pop stars like Kesha or Lady GaGa. While her songs are quite dancey, Madison brings an original style to pop music- and a lot of sex appeal.  Madison released the first installment of her four part EP series, The Noise Some People Make last Tuesday. The four-song set is full of pulsing beats and Madison’s sometimes sultry, sometimes childlike vocals.

”#1” is a love letter to what seems like an imaginary number-one guy. The lyrics are sweet and searching: “I triple cross my heart/I dug you from the start.” It’s catchy, and admittedly so much better than a lot of pop out there today. There’s a surprising element of intelligence there, like Madison has happened upon the secret formula for the perfect pop sound.

It’s funny; I thought this before I read that Madison dropped out of medical school to pursue her pop dreams. She’s a published neuroscience student from Miami and she has her hand in every aspect of this effort. There is something I really respect about that, and it makes me like her even better.

“Lights Low” is a solid dance club epic, complete with a really decent rap section from Madison. I think that’s hard to pull off without sounding cheesy. Madison peppers seemingly cliché phrases throughout, but it works. It would definitely fit into any decent DJ set.

“Superwoman” is probably my least favorite on the EP, but I don’t hate it. It’s just one of those girl power songs that I feel are overdone. The message is great, though, so it can stay.

“Hot, Hot Love” is just that. It’s provocative and sexy without going over the top. Madison does well at controlling her voice and producing a believable mood for the song.

I didn’t want to like Madison at first. I wanted to put her in a drawer with all the crap you hear on Top 40 radio stations. But Madison, with her sassy voice and skillful delivery, kept pushing her way out of the drawer, earning a spot in my music collection. I will surely add to it when the other installments of her project come out.
