Scavenger Hunt’s Self-titled EP is Ethereal

Nashville – What do you get when you get when you combine a pop vocalist and an 80’s musicality? Out of the musical depths of Los Angeles emerges Jill Lamoureaux and Dan Mufson of Scavenger Hunt, a musical duo that has recently released their debut self-titled EP on April 8. The six songs that the creative team has released are unearthly and beautiful, almost ethereal in sound.

People who are musically inclined tend to always appreciate new sounds whether or not they enjoy them, and it’s safe to say that this is one of those unique situations where the unusual style of Scavenger Hunt is both enjoyed and valued. Jill Lamoureaux has an easy-going voice that is light and angelic. Coupled with the compositions of Dan Mufson, the two created a poppy/light techno vibe that seems almost too strange to work – and yet it does.

The songs are simple both in title and lyrics. “Dreamers,” the third song on the EP, is an upbeat tune riddled with hope and optimism. Can’t you feel it comin’/Can’t you feel it comin’ is repeated a few times, and those lyrics give the listener a sense of wonder. We want some magic/We want to take control – aren’t those lyrics just chilling? They empower the listener.

The first song on the EP is titled “Lost” which evokes a depressing image. Initially it describes how two people are growing apart, which is something that occurs all too often unfortunately. However, the overall message is the attempt to get closer by getting lost together and being somewhere undiscoverable. It’s about finding one another again despite the clear rift in the relationship. The fact that it encourages a chance for two people to reunite makes it a hopeful song for those of us who have gone through difficult separations, be it with a friend or someone who means more than that to us.

“Bones,” the second song on the EP, seems to take on a similar vibe to “Lost.” It’s sort of that same hope that the previous song depicts (characterized primarily by the repeated lines of I wanna believe/I wanna believe) but includes slightly less transparent lyrics: In my dreams at night/All of the colors drain. These words show a slightly more depressive attitude than “Lost,” as if the singer is slowly accepting a fate that she doesn’t want to happen.

The first three songs are fairly mellow. They match the vibe of the album cover, which shows a woman swimming in clear blue-green water while wearing a virginal white dress. Upon the first look at the album cover, it conveys an immediate sense of purity and innocence that the songs then reinforce through hopeful lyrics. Have no fear, though. If mellow is not quite your thing, the last two tracks on the EP are remixes of “Dreamers” and “Lost.” The remixes take on a far more 1980’s dance vibe than the previous four songs, which allows the listener to really jam out and move along to the tunes.

Scavenger Hunt is currently on tour to promote the EP with Capital Cities. You can find the tour dates here and purchase the album here
