AUDIODAMN! Tour Diary – Davenport

AUDIODAMN! live for Best New Bands

Davenport – Daytrotter. Every musician loves entering a studio. Cool, overpriced vintage gear, a mixing desk, Guitars, Amps, Rooms, Carpets. It is – in fact – like coming home. Your breathing and heart rate start to slow down and your face muscles turn your frozen “aaaaaawwww”- face – from the cold weather outside – into a genuine smile. We were greeted heartwarmingly and started setting up our acoustic setup which brings me to the point that this day was actually historic in the band’s history…but I’m gonna get to it later….wait no I’m gonna get to it now..at least the first part of it.

Our first meet and greet as a band! The guys from B100 have actually been playing our song “Radar” a couple times (thanks guys!). So when the meet and greet started there were actually….there were no people here…but they eventually showed up. So in the end, around 10 really nice folks were in the room with us. (is “folks” the right expression here? I don’t know, my English is the worst. the worst.)

So we started playing our acoustic set – sounded great in the studio live room – and everybody seemingly enjoyed it or was being really polite. Had a good talk with everybody afterwards.

After that, we recorded acoustic versions of “Radar” and “Brief Microsleep” with emphasis on “Radar” with a 2 mic MS setup – for all of you who don’t know what that is, it’s an MS setup with 2 mics. Wait…that doesn’t explain it at all, I’m bad at this. It was basically just two microphones in the middle with us sitting around it, playing live. It sounded great and went really well. Good day with good people. Had some pizza, shared some good stories in a studio, nothing better than that!

We drove over to the venue and the guys from The Multiple Cat were just having their sound check. It sounded great! And what we discovered during our drive over was truly amazing – our first YouTube cover!! Meaning that someone actually covered our song “Radar”, played all the instruments and put it on YouTube. We just thought it was really sweet that someone enjoyed the song so much that he wanted to play it himself and show the world how he does it.

AUDIODAMN! LIVE - BEST NEW BANDS

So when we walked onstage, we were in a really good and relaxed state of mind, eager to play for all of these people. Thanks to Highly Suspect, or as we call them in German: “Die Hochsuspekten”. Thanks to them, the place was – again – packed.

So we started off with “Brief Microsleep “. It was amazing. Great crowd. Thanks guys. Ali jumping and playing his riffs. Mudi drumming his heart out. (See our review of the AUDIODAMN! Chicago show here.)

After “Lights Out”, “Radar” and “Trails” and right through the middle of “Give It Up”, Ali’s guitar stopped working. His guitar-jack was broken. In case you don’t know what that means, it certainly is a fu**ing piece of fu**ery when this happens, because you can’t use it until you get to a repair shop. Might have to do that tomorrow. So Mudi and I immediately launched a slower version of the rest of “Give It Up” which was…………… actually a lot of fun as well. Finally, all those hours walking around at home, re-harmonizing songs with my acoustic guitar paid off. So after that, we played/jammed a slow version of “Radar”, with a few new chords and turnarounds in there. Music is fun. After a while, Ali managed to borrow a guitar from Highly Suspect. They said – “We’re happy it got used on a Hendrix song”. It sure did. We played “Fire” as a grand finale with Ali jumping and banging out those riffs like crazy – seemingly happy he got a guitar again.

(Publisher’s Note: Audiodamn! is a new band from Germany. They’re touring the U.S. for the first time and have agreed to send Best New Bands exclusive updates on their experiences. Their debut EP will be out on January 8th on Epic Records.)
