MOURN Shares “Second Sage” from Sophomore LP

Mourn by Sarah Hess for Best New Bands

Los Angeles - Catalonia rock foursome MOURN recently announced Ha, Ha, He., the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. Ha, Ha, He. is due out June 3rd via Captured Tracks. Mourn has already shared two tracks from the album, “Storyteller” and “Evil Dead.” Now the band unleashed a stunning, new single: “Second Sage.”

Of “Second Stage,” MOURN’s Jazz Rodríguez Bueno says, “This song is about last August. I was feeling alone, I had nothing to do so I spent the most of the time playing the Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time. That was the only thing that made me feel good at that time, and it made me feel kind of useful somehow. One day after playing, I picked my guitar and started talking about it. It’s basically about me waiting for someone to talk to me while I am in the Fire Temple.”

MOURN’s self-titled 2014 debut LP exposed the world to the Catalonian teenage wunderkinds, who were making authentically great guitar-based music during a time when EDM was all the rage. These four dared to be different. Since then, the band has faced some very real personal and professional issues; things that 17-to-20 year olds normally don’t have to worry about. Though Mourn is a youthful band, maturity is no issue. Ha, He, He. delves into those issues and experiences, and it demonstrates just how great a band Mourn is.

Last year, Best New Bands caught up with Mourn at Pitchfork Music Festival. Aside from seeing the band’s killer set, we chatted with best friends, singers, and guitarists Jazz Rodríguez and Carla Pérez, drummer Antonio Postius, and bassist Leia Rodríguez. In our interview, Jazz described Ha, He, He. as “different but the same,” in comparing it to Mourn.

Ha, Ha, He. embodies Chicago post-rock and is bolstered with melodic quirkiness. The band even embraces a bit of pop, especially with “Brother, Brother” and “Howard.” Mourn is able to play around with pop in a way that doesn’t devalue songwriting or distract from the band’s rock base. This is not an easy task! While songs like “Second Sage” make it apparent MOURN has begun carving out its own niche.
